Robotics Without Borders: Expanding FIRST to Ethiopia!

Class of '25 team member, Robel Yoseph, has spearheaded the initiative to start the first FLL team in Ethiopia! Robel is of Ethiopian descent and has heard firsthand about the lack of opportunities for students in STEM and wants to help change that. He hopes that "By starting this team in Ethiopia it will inspire the next generation of engineers to take part in hands-on STEM experiences." He began by mass-emailing various schools in Ethiopia in hopes of getting in contact with one of them, which he eventually did. Although the school that contacted him initially agreed to start the team, he received no future responses to any follow-up communication.
He then contacted his dad's friend, who went to high school in Ethiopia, to see if he could contact the headmaster of St. Joseph School in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Through the help of the alumni group chat, he eventually made contact with Mr. Leul Belay, the IT Director at St. Joseph. The school agreed to create a team and The Walnut Hills FTC team, The NUTS! helped the St. Joseph team with the selection and registration process, as well as purchasing a Spike Prime™ kit to get their season started. Robel also hopes that "other schools will follow this path and contribute to the growing economic boom in Ethiopia by creating opportunities for these future engineers."
